Rachel Bagley, Energy Programs Manager
As I was out walking my dogs Friday night (or they were walking me) I looked up at the still colorful trees in my neighborhood and thought, “Hard to believe November is almost here…” But it won’t be long until the leaves are gone and the days not only grow shorter, but colder. While no one can say for sure what will come, projections are for a colder winter this year for the mid-west. So don’t get left out in the cold if you don’t have to. Check out our Energy Assistance Program (EAP.)
EAP helps pay for home heating costs for individuals or households who are income eligible. Almost everyone who depends on just Social Security or some other source of fixed income would qualify. I encourage senior citizens, persons with disabilities and families or individuals who struggle to pay their heating bills take a look at our income guidelines.
If you’ve ever heard of the Minnesota Cold Weather Rule, we can help you sign up. It is true that the Cold Weather Rule can protect you from disconnection, but only if you sign up with your vendor and make a payment plan. Fuel companies (propane and oil) do not have Cold Weather Rule protection, but are often willing to work with you on payment plans. Communication is key when you are working with the vendors who supply your energy.
The EAP season runs until May, or until funds run out. I would encourage you to apply early, and contact us with any questions. We can help with heating emergencies and furnaces, too. Enjoy the beautiful autumn weather while you can, but keep us in mind for help with your heating costs this winter!
